Video rendering

   o  ncurses' hashmap scrolling optimization code causes the screen to
      occasionally flicker because it tries to optimize the vertical
      scrolling.

   o  Slang cannot display 256 colour pairs under Unix. This is partially
      solved by the OPTIMISE_SLANG_PALETTE code.

   o  the X11 driver is very slow.
